Should website copywriters guarantee sales to their clients?

I think not.

Not only because of the fact that marketing doesn’t equal sales (these two are similar, but not the same). But, because I think it’s not fair to do it either to (potential) clients or to myself.

Now, I’m not talking from a pedestal. I did try going down that path once. And that’s why I feel I can talk on this topic.

Here’s how it went.
So, at the very start of my business (back in 2023), I put a “guarantee” on my LinkedIn headline—but it made me feel icky and weird.

It was something like, “You’ll get quality inquiries within 60 days.”

I based that guarantee on my past experience! But I was also aware that this experience might not be enough, nor necessarily relevant, for my ideal client.

Because working with a large company is not the same as working with a small online business.

Also, many other factors come into play, such as:

the quality of the client’s service or product

the type of service or product

other people involved in the process

the client’s level of involvement

the fact that every client is different and has different goals (not everyone needs to grow 50x)

That’s why I soon removed that part from my headline.

And I made peace with the fact that it’s perfectly fine not to guarantee something that ultimately isn’t even up to me.
The sale happens on a discovery call, after the client sends a proposal, or at some other stage of the sales funnel. The website copy is just a friendly nod towards the sale.


But I can promise my potential clients 6 things:

a) I will research the client, their service, and their ideal customer

b) I will provide support with my friendly and open approach

c) I will communicate as clearly as possible

d) I will do my best to write copy that truly speaks to their ideal client

e) I will deliver on time

f) I will accept constructive feedback and incorporate it into revisions

These are enough for me—and I believe for my clients too—for all of us to sleep well at night, while getting that bag.
