Helping a Squarespace Designer Find the Right Words for Her Website

by | Mar 21, 2025

A website can have a wow design, user-friendly experience but still won’t bring in visits or new leads. Most of the times, the issue is with the website copy.
Here’s a quick case study about a recent website audit I did for a website designer.

When a Website Looks Great but Feels Off

Alexandra, a US based Squarespace designer, had a website that looked polished, professional, and user-friendly.

But something felt off—her copy wasn’t pulling its weight. She knew her website wasn’t doing much to attract or convert clients, yet she couldn’t pinpoint the exact issues.

That’s when she reached out to me for a website copy audit.

First Impressions

This wasn’t one of those websites where mistakes jump out at you. Alexandra had already done a lot right:

  • The design was clean and UX-friendly.
  • The copy was simple and jargon-free.
  • Her tone of voice was bubbly, friendly, and consistent.

At first glance, everything seemed fine. But as I went deeper, I found a few classic copywriting mistakes lurking beneath the surface.

The Key Issues Holding Her Website Back

Even though Alexandra’s website had a strong foundation, a few subtle but critical issues reared their ugly heads:

  1. Inconsistent Messaging

Her About Me page suggested she was a Virtual Assistant (VA), while her Homepage positioned her as a Squarespace designer. Yikes!

  1. Generic Language

Phrases like “Let’s take your business to the next level” lacked specificity and could apply to almost any service provider.

  1. Not Enough Focus on the Ideal Client’s Core Problems

Instead of highlighting the deeper pain points her clients faced, she focused more on surface-level symptoms (e.g. clients just lack the time to handle their website by themselves).

Effective copy connects directly with what the audience is struggling with and offers a solution that’s the most obvious choice.

The Copy Audit: a Detailed, Actionable Breakdown

After analyzing three key pages of Alexandra’s website (homepage, services and about me), I compiled a +1900-word PDF outlining:

🟠 What was already working well (I always like to highlight the good stuff first).

🟠What needed improvement.

🟠 Clear, specific recommendations for every issue I found.

The Result: Clearer, More Compelling Copy

Alexandra was thrilled with the insights she received. Here’s what she had to say:

“Luca did an amazing job with my website copy audit! Her feedback was clear, honest, and super actionable—exactly what I needed. She didn’t just point out what could be improved; she offered specific, thoughtful suggestions that made it easy to see how I could better connect with my audience.”

With the audit in hand, she had a clear roadmap for refining her copy so it aligned better with her brand and business goals.
